The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) has released a notice regarding the interview-cum-counselling round for the free coaching program for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently provided an update on its strict actions against non-compliant coaching institutes in Mukherjee Nagar. According to officials, these actions were carried out in response to an order from the Delhi High Court. On a single day (Tuesday), the MCD sealed the basement and mezzanine floors of approximately 20 coaching institutes. Fresh notices were also issued to around 80 institutes after considering their representations.

This recent crackdown follows a fire incident in mid-June at a coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar, which resulted in injuries to 61 students. In August, the MCD had already sealed 14 centers in Mukherjee Nagar that were operating from basements without proper fire safety clearance. Similar notices had also been served to 90 institutes in the Shahdara south zone.

The High Court had directed on July 25 that all coaching centers must be closed down if they did not have a no-objection certificate from the fire services department. It was revealed in court that out of the 583 coaching centers, only 67 had obtained fire clearances.

A cybercriminal tricked a 44-year-old homemaker from Sadashivanagar into giving him Rs 30,000 while posing as an online Bitcoin trading coach. The woman learned about his “training sessions” on Instagram and believed they were legitimate, so she deposited the money into the specified accounts.

The fraudster contacted her and instructed her to register for the online training. Following his instructions, she registered on September 9th and a person who called himself Kripal Koli asked her to pay a Rs 20,000 registration fee. Then she was asked to deposit an additional Rs 10,000 as a training fee. After she made the payment, the suspect disappeared and ceased all communication with the homemaker.

Experts and district administration officials in Kota, Rajasthan have expressed concerns about the practice of segregating students into different batches in coaching centers. This practice has come under scrutiny as it is believed to contribute to student stress and has been linked to an increasing number of student suicides. The district administration has advised coaching institutes against batch segregation, stating that every student has different requirements and that segregating them into batches leaves less room for them to benefit from each other.

In Kota, coaching institutes categorize students into various batches, with the “Star batch” being considered the best. This batch provides the top-performing students with additional attention, motivational classes, and special sessions. To accommodate these students, there are approximately 2,500 registered hostels in Kota. These hostels house a total of 1.2 lakh students who pay monthly fees ranging from Rs 7,000 to Rs 30,000 for their accommodation and food. About 80% of these students have single rooms. As the demand for accommodation rises, around 15,000 to 20,000 additional spaces are created every year. The popularity of 1BHK flats and studio apartments has also increased as some parents, primarily mothers, choose to stay in the city during the coaching season. Additionally, around 4 to 5 lakh parents visit Kota each year, contributing Rs 100 crore to the travel industry.

Being a coaching hub, Kota also benefits from the market for books. Students purchase approximately 50 lakh books annually, amounting to Rs 40 crore to Rs 50 crore in book sales. On average, students spend Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per person on books and stationery. In addition to books, around 6 lakh uniforms, priced at Rs 500 to Rs 600 each, are sold to students. The teenage students also engage in occasional fashion purchases, collectively contributing around Rs 60 crore per year to the clothing industry.

The cost of food ranks third in terms of expenses for students, falling behind tuition and accommodation. Students residing outside hostels as paying guests spend Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per year on meals. Public transportation options, such as autorickshaws, vans, and buses, are relatively affordable, with students paying Rs 30 to Rs 50 per day. However, approximately 20,000 students opt to buy new bicycles each year.

The coaching industry in Kota generates an impressive revenue of up to Rs 5,000 crore annually. There are six large institutes in the city, each catering to more than 5,000 full-time students, alongside several smaller ones. The yearly fees at these institutes range from Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh. The coaching sector also provides direct employment to 2 lakh individuals and indirectly supports another 1.5 lakh jobs. The government earns up to Rs 700 crore in taxes from this industry.

Furthermore, approximately 20 to 30 ‘star’ teachers in Kota earn over Rs 1 crore per year, with the highest package reaching Rs 2 crore. Even the starting salary for the 4,000 to 5,000 teachers in coaching institutes is impressive, at Rs 8 lakh or Rs 67,000 per month. Approximately 10% of these teachers are IITians.
